Offering much needed educational resources through private sector funding, the Pick n Pay School Club is South Africa’s longest existing educational programme for primary and high schools; and has established itself as the country’s largest brand-funded educational programme.

Schools are hungry for new and innovative approaches to help them deliver the prescribed educational curriculum.

The Pick n Pay School Club was established to supply brand sponsored educational material to schools for free. This material is both curriculum aligned and grade specific, and all the content is written by qualified curriculum writers who have the required expertise to develop such material. The material, consisting of books, posters, overview brochures, recognition stickers, certificates and mirror decals, is extensively used and reused in the classroom. The content is created under the following themes: Create-it; Healthy Mind; Healthy Body; Healthy World and Print-it.

Pick n Pay School Club has, through Pick n Pay and its partners created this platform that delivers much-needed educational support.

School Club liaises with schools frequently through the use of School Liaison Officers (SLOs) who visit schools throughout the year. The SLOs activate school competitions and educate teachers on how to use the provided material. The SLOs also host regular teacher workshops in communities to provide teachers with a platform to have their questions answered, and provide networking opportunities to them.

“The School Liaison Officers motivate us with their talks, assist the learners and create an atmosphere where the wonderful Pick n Pay School Club resources can be used,” says Mrs Grace Pillay from Tyburn Primary School, KwaZulu-Natal.

The school competitions activated by the SLOs assist in sustaining ongoing interactions with schools nationally.

Pick n Pay School Club competitions include the following:

The Pick n Pay Nutrition competition
The competition requires learners to create their own “Superfruit” character from their favourite fruit and to submit their entry with the character’s name and what their character does to ensure children eat their vegetables and fruit.

Pick n Pay Healthy World competition
Learners are required to design a poster on one of South Africa’s endangered species, and explain why each of them is important to the ecosystem; what people are doing to save them and why it is important to rehabilitate this species.
